Warhammer 40k Miniatures in Guatemala

Get to slow start the new year.

This year change, I have been painfully slow, by this date last year I managed to had a small tournament where an eldar model was at stake. this year I wan to do the same but this time I have a Gaunt Ghosts novel I want to use as prize.

Since we usually have only one day to do the tournament I want to follow the following rules:

Army size 500pts
FOC: standard that means at least 2 troops and one HQ.
Scenarios: the standard ones from the rule book randomly assigned, but I both parties agree a battle mission scenario can be used.
Table size: 4x4
Painting: Not required but as always desired.
Points: Win = 3pts, draw = 1 all else = 0
Tournament style: Round robin
FAQ usage: Mandatory latest GW released faqs.
Day if all participating parties agree Sunday: 29 Jan 2012 as a backup plan Sunday 5 Feb 2012
Inscription: send 500pts list via comment or email with preferred date at least the day before the tournament is to be played.

As always the intention of this tournament is to kickstart the year with good footing and a great time. please let me know your opinions.

Magnetizing my Predator sponsons´

After completing the work on the turret I moved to the next prime subject the sponson weapons work here was easy and fast since all I had to do is replace the stubs on the piece where the weapons are mounted then make the hole that I remarked on the picture with a red circle a little bigger so a magnet could be placed there next

as always the magnets should be correctly oriented or you wont have snapping into place weapons but flying away ones.

Sadly here I forget to take some pictures on the weapons inner parts but the principle is similar to the one I used on the drop pod weapon options

the main difference here is that you can only use one magnet not two and you need to make a bigger hole carefully or either you will end up with a magnets that falls off place or an broken piece because the pressure on the stub hole is too much as you can see on the lascannon example

to finish I drilled the corresponding holes for the bolters

so far the project just need to resolve one question, do I seal the chassis as a predator only or do I fix it as a rhino chassis with magnets? as you can see a difficult choice.

Magnetizing my predator turret options

After finishing my predator turret main work I keep on working on the options like the hatch, the hunter killer the search light and the radar dish.
The first step consisted of drilling a hole on the built radar dish base as you can see here:

next I glued a magnet to the turret hull interior, I selected one place where I though the radar would look good and applied a bit of glue to the turret interior next with a bit of careful placement (you got to remember that there are other magnets on the turret hull by now) I dropped the magnet, assuring correct magnet polarity and a correct placement in one single move.

If everything else is correct you will have a piece that attach with good force to the turret as you can see here where I have everything sideways.

Step 3 consisted of drilling holes on the remaining options mentioned before:

Step 4 consisted of placing magnets to the hatch options. to accomplish this I glued a rod of plastic so it is recessed and the hatch doesn't´t protrude from the turret top.
next I drilled a hole in hatch inner sprue and glued properly aligned magnets to each,

To test if the alignment was the correct I move one hatch on top of each other and If they snapped together everything was ok.

Finally I worked on the bolter that I decided to glue to the hatch with the base and mounted everything as a test.

so far most of the magnetization options are done, but that is for the next time.

Magnetizing my Predator Turret

I just started to build my predator and since I have magnetized most of my STC build's I'm posting here how I did it so others my benefit of my little tinkering.

I started by building the turret and cannons.

Next I added 2 medium magnets on the turret front holes as you can see in the next pictures.

Then I clipped the studs and glued some big magnets

After doing so I tested them and worked perfectly, at most I could dremel a better position for the big magnets witch I used because I wanted a really strong adherence in the canon but it is not a must, if you only have medium magnets you can use them, but you must remember that the magnets must be touching each other, so it might be drilling time.

Lastly I didn’t decided that I didn’t want to choose the rear part of the turret so I glued some magnets to the inner part of both choices

Lastly glued the tops and some magnets on the turret interior, here I must warn you that you must be careful with the placement of the magnets or they will snap to only to one side, it is not difficult only a precise operation where you drop some glue in the rear part of the turret interior and then put the already magnetized piece then drop a magnet on the turret interior then put a non magnet separator between the 2 points and drop the other one and voila It will work wonderfully and with out drilling.

One last word of advice: Check All magnets alignments so you have pieces that snap into place and not pieces that fall apart or resist being next to each other.

Preparing my power station

I'm working right now on my power station, I decided that I should be an Imperial one so I added some scrolls and bits to do its part, I will try do base it next weekend and get it ready for play by next month.

I have completed my SM drop pod and I also used as a dread delivery system last Saturday, It was a blast since I don’t play to win (HAHAHA what a liar) but I really enjoy the what ifs, so far the last Saturday was the most engaging of them all, I managed to win one game by concentrating on delivering one combat squad and making him run all the way to the objective in one of the battle mission books then in the other two games I didn’t apply for the correct tactics but overall it was so fun I lost track of time and didn’t remember to stop until 8pm way too late since I had time until 5pm only. unfortunately I didn’t took pictures. but I leave you here some pictures from my drop pod.

Today is revolution day in Guatemala, so I managed to get some deserved rest with it I worked a bit on my model now that the mekboy is strong on me. I managed to scratch build the tracks and the make the model look better what do you think.

I was watching some piks on my PC, is incredible how I got 1GB of pictures all related to warhammer, when the mekboy in me started to roar big time, it was while I watched the forgeworld big gunz so I knew what has to be done.

Quickly I grabbed some plastic and my knife and started to cut here and there until the beginnings of my first gretching vehicle came into being, it is not complete since it lacks the propulsion system and some rives but overall its coming nicely,and only one change was added, the cannon needed a bit more bulk so I added a flame boy fuel tank I think it works better.

I keep working on the Drop pod yesterday and I have almost finished work, If am able to prime it black I might be able to paint it by next weekend.

Almost everything is to my liking the only bump in the road is that one of the doors open to much you can see it here on the lower part of the picture where you can see one of the doors not closing correctly.

Starting to built my Drop Pod

Ok, I managed some time to start doing my drop pod,

and the first order of business was to search on From the warp some assembly instructions and they are really spot on but I wanted to improve a bit, so I tried to place the magnets before assembling the door halves so it looks better.

I think it works fine but I had to use some green stuff to hold the magnets.

next I tried the fins

Finally a dry test fit.

Like many GW models I like the mini a lot, I look forward to have it done.

Next time I will have figured how to glue the base magnets since I will have the door magnets behind plastic and not directly facing the base ones.

I kept working on my broad side and It helped me get a more refined version of the schema, the most important change is that instead of pure black for the metal parts I will use a bluish one.

One final tough is that In the hard corners of the white areas I decided to paint a bit of gray, it helped a lot.

Showtime weekend

This weekend I was invited to the IPMS (our country plastic modelers assoc.) convention by one of the sponsors of the event to help show hellboy’s and my minis how cool warhammer is to the public.

Overall is the first time my minis get that much light and is gratifying to hear good compliments on my minis.

I got invited by the association to participate next November that pleases me a lot and will work on one or two models to my best.

Due to time constrains locally we aren't doing a armies abode 750 so far only one time we played to 1k so I will post my general purpose armies for the pts. level that we are used to play.

Getting to table top readiness

To conclude my work on the current stage for my Land Raider I decided that for it to be table top ready was enough, with that my inner self regrets not painting the interior but that is what happens when you don’t have the proper time to do stuff you like to do. so far it lacks hardliners and more finishing touches but I think that as you can see here it is pretty much done to be a playable unit.

Choices had to be made II

After last post I want to recapitulate my harsh point so you don’t have to repeat my errors, first since you need to be sure about the alignment on the sponson magnets I had it correctly the first time but over turned the axis and thought that I had already place the magnet on the correct polarity when in it was wrong. another point you can improve my work is how you place the magnets in the axis because I didn’t do it very carefully and now they are not really aligned that is why I used magnets on the union point for the flamer to the fuel tanks.

Ok I ‘m posting today the pictures of my recently built Land Raider, it is magnetized an used the Magnetizing a Land Raider post at heresy on-line to do it, first are the pictures for the hull magnet points which are 3 plus the 2 sponson hinges.

Next will be the weapon magnets

for the Assault canon cover I used no magnets just some clip parts so the magnets on top of the guns can pull it on place, here I was careful not to fill the complete recess so it can function as a guide for the proper place of the cover.

the flamers magnets are 2 on the main gun body and one for the tank in the connecting piece for the tank.

for the covers I used 2 tiny magnets to attach to the weapon of choice

next are the hatches and main body antenna with this little arrangement they are free to rotate but the must be centered and close enough to have a strong bond.

that is so far, in pictures and one final comment I would like to leave here to make reference to this post title:

I decided to use a mainly closed LR because I really don’t have to paint a so finely detailed interior and because an un-careful drop of glue ruined the front hatch opening mechanism. the later reason is just pure coincidence but the former is a deliberated choice I had to make so the model wouldn’t take another 3 months half finished waiting for the deserved attention it should get because work and life doesn’t allow it, for my it was a heart wrenching decision because the interior is just lovely but it wouldn’t be finished on a realistic timetable without needing a lot more effort from me and sacrificing the few spare or sleeping time I have. as I said it is difficult.

I would like to know what you would do with that choice.

How I do red Lens

Since Im not an expert I decided to anotate here my step by step for easy red lens, first the colors:

Chaos Black for the base
Scorched brown
Machrite red or scab red
Blood red
Blazing orange
Skull white

Those are the colors I work you can substitute every one but a dark brown is needed to help achieve the transition between black and red, here all color will be applied at the bottom of the lens to help achieve the effect of light reflected on the lens from above but you can vary it as you see fir.

the first step is to cover the surface in black

then you apply scorched brown leaving the black in a round shape located at the top, also important is that you aren't tidy

the more uneven the brown is applied the better, then you put the machrite red following the shape that you used for the scorched brown but leaven a bit uncovered.

for the blood red you repeat the pattern, again leaving a bit of machrite red uncovered.

then you follow with a line of blazing orange , here we are almost finished.

And finish by applying with on the uper corner opposite from where the red colors are concentrated.

you can do corner or a dot as you can see on the next picture.

here is easy, as you can see the results are convincing and require little expertise. I hope you like it till next time.

Ok I washed the hull of my Whirlwind and even tough I didn't love it was ok, so my next step was to do it on the other 2,but after the results is evident a new paint coat will be needed.

you love your hobby and either you are new to the blogging world and want to have a blog or you already have one in both cases you see that there are already a lot of blogs out there about the same topic and now you have doubts about blogging.

What to do?

I have been there and let me tell you that I think that you should start or keep blogging if it is in your heart to share with the rest of the world, because your views and experiences are unique and that makes them worth sharing.

You still have doubts, then let me tell you that even if not everything you are going to post might be worthy for all, it might be to someone because of the way you do something or how they receive your personal opinion and that is the beauty of blogging.

When you share your knowledge you help the community to grow and that is great.

Advancing my STC

today I worked on my 3 vehicles. now all I have to do the are the hatches.

I added a blue wash on the whirlwind, still deciding if it will work.

so far the doors aren't glued.

so far I love how they look.

and magnets rule.

I hope to use them next august 6.

Smurfing the STC step 1

Ok today I tried my airbrush with not so bad consequences, but after the third trial I must admit that I suck at it.first I forgot to have all pieces ready to paint so some parts where left behind.

but anyway here are the pictures and lets start with a nice group view.

Next the lovely whirlwind that is template I have always loved, it might be the missile launcher silhouette or more the fact that it is an indirect fire weapon, I simply don’t know.

a beauty but not too much behind it, comes the razor back, is taking a nice route from here.

Last the only STC I regret its purchasing, I could have had a predator or something else but no UI went directly with the Rhino, anyway regretting the purchase doesn't mean that I don’t love it, is a nice miniature

I hope that they are ready soon because they already look great and I have a land rider , drop pod and a predator ready to take their place.

A creepy feeling is growing in me

Lately I have been reviewing my stuff ad reading more and more about how GW is becoming an evil monster ready to suck on the blood of new players, I usually dismiss the rants since I care to collect mostly and their minis are super and are just getting better, but even that doesn’t feel proper all the time, and now is one of those times when I let my turmoil be expressed because I really want to hear what you think.
I regret that while much of the fluff material on the codices is getting better it is also true that they are using they color section that used to be packed with good minis and how to paint them to just a gallery of minis.

Other place I can point my finger for my feeling is the site, not so much ago if I need a hobby article but didn’t knew where to find it I just used the internal search engine, now that engine is just returning models I can buy, how hobby friendly is that, I might be missing the boat on configuration for my search but there used to be an option to separate purchasing searches from articles.

I know that I can keep into wh40k because their history and minis are the best and I simply love them, but I understand that it is something that can be easily ruined, my hope is that it is not the case and we have overly priced minis for a while (they are great after all, even if this is a non essential product).
After taking all of that of my heart I would like what you think on the topic.

A bit more love for my STCs

After a really long time I finally decided to work a bit on 2 of my Space Marine hulls.

first I added some magnets on the hulls and some metal on two of the upper tops.

for the tops I clipped the plastic hinges and clipped some fat clips parts that I glued to the tops and voila it has an strong bond.

after that had been done I decided that I needed some motivation so I painted the interior with my airbrush, dam thing doesn't sprayed paint properly, really a pain, if it wasn’t for it my hulls would be blue right now, anyway here are the first two interiors:

I really like how they look, but I will need to have open door for them to be of use. I really want to have them ready for the next battle that should be soon.

besides that have been invited to test Google+ so you might find me there, because for once I will jump on a social tool in the early stages, I'm more of the late kind of guy for it.

Ok, after my heart broke with the the chipping paint on my TAU minis, I have done a lot of work in real life, and so little work on my hobby one.

Currently I'm learning how to paint power weapons in a new easy to use way, I found about at YouTube at Catafish channel, is just a lot to like, I used a variant for the color because I really wanted that my weapons used a color that Is more compatible, so instead of using blue hues I choose red ones, for those interested here are some pictures so you can decide if it is worth a try.

btw definitely is way better not to use the flash when using close up (middle pic).

Disaster has befallen my TAU and Vangard SM

Ok after posting the grainy pictures I haven touched my minis in a while so Today I decided to add some paint work and noticed something odd in the helmet of one of the warriors, I passed my nail over it and the paint peeled of.

Imagine my surprise when I tested further and discovered that all the model could be cleaned off like that, so I keep testing and it happened on all the painted warriors but not on the primed ones, next I tried the piranha and the devilfish hull I had at hand, even the vanguard peel off I just need to put my nail on a flat part and pull and voila an un painted section comes off. AHHHHHH.

I will to test on the primed minis and see if after painting them they suffer the same fate. It has never happened before. I even grabbed my Maernus Calgar and tried to do the same and it didn’t happened.

Now what? I need to strip everything and use a different base (first time using Testors primer, I always used flat black or white and always worked like a charm).

Getting in touch with old friends

As amazing as it might seem Ashi has find in Chaos a real call. so hard in fact the he has changed the tone of his blog. So to help him I contacted the friend to whom I gave my Chaos Army. It was painted near 2003 but I cant remember exactly when. so they are not so refined as later works.

I will start with lots of pictures from the troops choices, please be patient because there are a lot of pictures an almost no comment here.

Ok today, I worked on my Terminator Chaplain, what a mini to work on. just lovely easy to paint and nice details.

I need to understand why in the pictures the surface is so grainy, is not like that in person but I guess that the flash reveal things that the naked eye doesn’t see.

A vision made reality.

A few months ago I dreamed of a system where a campaign could be played. back then I mentioned a new undiscovered planet near the tau space, now after following the excellent tutorial on planet creation on gimp that you can find at: http://mygimptutorial.com/the-ultimate-gimp-planet-tutorial

Back story:

The system PL3-40 was hidden in or near a recently closed warp storm that was close to what now is know as the Tau empire space. But it was not unknown to the empire because In the sector a few millennia ago two empire fleets where dispatched and after a few confusing reports were never heard off again. Since further expeditions only encountered a raging war storm that blockaded travel to the system it was left to linger and be forgotten.

Forgotten but not unrecorded because now that a rogue trader by the name of rifeju wejo found the system and detected some possible valuables there in the main planet the Administratum has decreed that the system must be reclaimed in the name of the empire.

Already some space marines have send units there to help enforce the decree, but they might be too late because the imperial Tarot has prophesized that a space hulk will appear near the same moment the mightiest of humanity will arrive to secure the planet. And being too close the tau empire it will definitely do something about the system.

what will be of the system, only time will tell.

Testing the main TAU hull

Today I managed a few moments on my TAU vehicles.
the other option I have is to partially reverse the blue and white. what do you think.
other detail is that the upper grill is gold as you have previously seen on the piranha.

Fire warrior and crisis schemas mostly done.

I have been working a lot on my tau, currently and I think that the I like the white and black pallet with blue shadows is my favorite, so much that all fire warriors are going to the paint shop.

here are some pictures for the infantry pallet.

after that I think the main challenge is how to proceed with the crisis suits.

next my piranha:

here I'm repeating the trick for the shadows Flekzzo, it is simply a asurmen blue wash with a fine brush, later on it will be retouched to hide the imperfections.

last some work on progress for the other vehicles

next time I hope to handle the camera a bit proper.

More Progress on my TAU test models

Ok. Today I worked on one of the drones to select the complementary colors.

I decided to use necron abyss in some panels and I like it a lot, specially if I use asurmen blue to color every recess.

For metal I decided to use gold in some grills and a highlighted bolt gun metal in the (mostly) non visible parts.

Today I want to share my prototypes. I have decided for white armor, even if it gets dirty too soon.

My problem is that I haven't decided the other color, so far I think it will be black with dark color highlights.

I finally got to finish my second kroot squad it took me the incredible speed of 3 miniatures per day (2 hours really). I really dislike to built them the arms are a real pain. but here are any way.

I also managed to paint the greater part of my last unfinished AoBR miniature, the captain I didn’t finished because the arm is really good stored (read between lines, WHERE COULD IT BE SCOOBY)
once I find the arm I think it will look great.

The last point a preview for the conversion process I used to convert my crisis suits.
Is is an easy process if you have a sharp knife, you simply start embedding the blade along the red line one little push at the time if you are careful you will get a nicely separated leg, that can be positioned in a very natural angle with out resorting to hiding tricks.

Todays work on my piranha

I keep working on my tau, currently I have ready 1 Kroot squad, 3 Fire warriors, 1 Broadside, 1 crisis, a lot of drones a heluva lot of drones and about 60 painted bases to be used on my tau, by the way I usually have a rim color and this time it is whit I hope it works when all is said and done.

here are the pictures so enjoy:

the last fire warrior squad is armed with carbines instead of rifles, but I plan to use them as mobile pressure point.

a picture I wanted to show, I'm trying to get my hands on helmets because I really plan to use my 4 pilots as soldiers so I used one of the arms of them in this soldier.

I dedicated some extra time and my trusted Dremel to magnetize the main weapon

and it pivots here is picture that hides part of my secret.

the recipe took advantage of the fact that a good strong magnet can be hidden in the nose allowing me to use an smaller magnet in the piece that holds the turret in place.

here is the second magnet it really helps a lot, I could have use a piece of metal but the effect wouldn’t be as strong and I really need like that If I want the turret secured in place during gaming.

Only remaining point is to have a piece glued to the rotating part of the turret so it never falls out of place when changing the weapon.

My little personal Tau rumor

Ok, today I tried to get the commander shadowsun and some other tau from my usual source, and I got for answer that the Tau that are not plastic are no longer available for them to sale.

The reasoning is that the Tau are being prepared for the new release on Q1 2012.

if true or not take it with a grain of salt as usual.

I finally finished to paint the bases for the 2 TAU battle forces.

What a lot to paint. 3 mid bases and 57 small ones

besides that I started to test my new compressor I think that with it My tanks will have better paint works.

Breaking radio silence

I been busy since my last post, I know that you really know why, so I want to show the current progress.

I started by getting ready a lot of bases, approx. 54

it is really a lot, then I worked on the fire warriors and kroot from my first battle force.

as you can see along the way I worked on the transport.

Then I worked on the Kroot, from the 2 squads I must confess that I got really mad when the turn to glue the arms arrived, for some reason I found the arms from both units maddening to glue as I wanted.

Next was the turn of the drones, boring but better than the arms

then I worked on the crisis suits, first I built the commander and then the one that came in the first box, working on the later I decided to magnetize them so I started to do it but I didn’t like so now I'm changing strategy and it my end up looking better.

after deciding that the strategy for the mount points were to hide stronger magnets inside the body, I remembered that the commander body was already glued so a bit of disaster was served until I tried the magnets with the metal parts of the broadside that were just opened, guess what GW metal is not magnet friendly.

after reading the rules I decided that since the broadside only has the capability to change arms I decided that the already glued body would serve for it.

a bit of glue later and I am a happy guy.

I worked on some other things but I think that is good for tonight, tomorrow I will post more pictures of the rest.

(guess what, did you count everything right, it sounds like a post is missing. Bonus points for the follower that answer what post is missing).

Today I’m doing something unusual, what you will find here is a reprint of an excellent tyranid article that I read yesterday at The back 40k_ about how to properly use that army.

A reprint you may say has no value but the catch is that I will do it in Spanish so Hellboy can get the meaning of the article better. So here it is:

Thegravemind dice en su blog que ha estado pensando en los Tiranidos gracias a Purgatus y Kenedy, Inclusive Brent, Hyv3mynd y Sinsynn (de dondequiera que venga) han estado discutiendo los insectos últimamente.

Acá están los principios; aun en la mesa los Tiranidos actúan como un gran organismo. En la escala galáctica, en la escala de escaramuzas, todos los aspectos de los Tiranidos están dominados por la biología. ¿A que estoy llegando? a Fagocitosis por supuesto.

Fagocitosis es el acto que sucede cuando una célula envuelve y absorbe materia extraña para aislarla y consumirla.

En el libro Tiranido, todo es en su mayoría rango 12” o 24” hay muy pocas armas que lleguen más allá. Aun las habilidades y mejoras son de alcance corto. Catalizador, ataque, progenie de enjambre, la lista sigue. A lo que llegamos es que ninguna parte del ejército Tiranido debe estar a más de 12 pulgadas de cualquier otra parte del ejército. Es un concepto de coherencia de escuadrón a nivel gigante. Afortunadamente para nosotros, cada arma en el libro es un arma de asalto. Es como si ellos quisieran que funcionara así. (Lo descartare como coincidencia; Todos sabemos que GW no planea las cosas).

Seguro que tiene sus debilidades, como moverse y pegarle a unidades en los linderos, pero tendrás que planificar. Si necesitas dividirte, piensa en una división celular. Necesitaras suficientes unidades que se apoyen unas a las otras y que se puedan separar a la mitad y aun así continuar funcionando. Eso significa redundancia y planificación del ejército. Es difícil partir un Trygon en dos, así que es necesario tener otra unidad que cumpla con esa función.

De regresó a la gran imagen, entre más unidades se tiene a 12 pulgadas una de la otra, mejor. Se tiene más opciones para contra atacar, que mejoras van donde, cuando usar los poderes y donde. Ser capaz de colocar un Tiranido de enjambre y un Tervigon cerca en el mismo combate, puede incrementar el poder de combate de los gaunts tres veces (Realmente 3.38 veces pero quien se mata con la matemática de todas formas).

Tus unidades protectoras son las paredes de la célula, las de sinapsis son el núcleo. Mientras atraviesas el campo de batalla la forma puede cambiar y fluir, pero la unidad entre el ejército completo será evidente mientras consumes todo en el camino. Lo que todo esto realmente conduce es el hecho de que los Tiranidos requieren mucha sinergia y previsión en cada turno y los que le siguen. Se mueve el ejército como una unidad gigante, se planifica dónde va cada modelo, cuales remover como víctimas y cuál es el punto débil. Se es capaz de predecir de donde vendrá el próximo asalto y por tanto se tendrá suficientes unidades para contenerlo.

Una buena lista no solamente necesitara redundancia, sino variedad. Un acercamiento de sobrevivencia del más apto, una unidad no será buena para manejar un cierto enemigo, así que asegúrate de tener una que si pueda. Los Hoods pueden ayudar a que los Zoantropos no se desmoralicen y huyan atreves de asaltantes, Así que ten un Tiranofex para seguir intentando. Los Tervigones mueren y los gaunts no pueden con la infantería, por lo que es bueno tener algunos guerreros o raveners para asaltar. Los guardias del enjambre no pueden colocar suficientes tiros en unidades tipo Horda, para estos casos es bueno tener biovoros que pueden colocar plantillas de explosión grandes con los cuales las pulverizaran.

Todo el tiempo se hace esto mientras se mueve la masa completa hacia adelante. Es una bola de biomasa que engulle y crece mientras se mueve, expandiéndose en la mitad de la mesa y amenazando con cubrirla completamente. Usa las habilidades para tener el control de la mesa. Usa el momento de las criaturas monstruosas atacando los tanques y tus numerosos enjambres para sobrecoger a cualquier infantería lo suficientemente tonta para acercarse dentro del rango y aplastarlo todo delante de ti.

Ok I just finished reviewing my loot, so you can understand my happiness, this time around I used my budget to finally kick the bucket and added a third army to my collection

the I mechanized my Space marines, I love the smell of mech in my bday morning

then I love to have a good collection of codices and I was missing the Dark Eldar codex so I ordered it of course.

then at last but not least is the complementary items and the Terminator chaplain that was so much needed (hahahaha it really the fact that I love the way it looks).

WH40K for dummies: Grenades

In a recent game I had an eldar wave serpent in assault range of my tactical squad but I didn’t do anything because I didn’t had a weapon capable of piercing trough the amour. At least that was because what I though , but space marines have as default frag and krak grenades and you must always remember that you can use them in the assault phase against a vehicle as follows

if you squad have defensive grenades you can hit the vehicle with one attack per grenade equipped miniature at strength 4 plus D6.
if your miniature has krak grenades then you attack at strength 6 plus D6
if your miniature has melta bombs the attack is strength 8 plus 2D6.

In each case to hit you follow the usual rules to hit a vehicle, automatic when stationary, 4+ if cruising speed and 6 when moved at combat speed, of course you are attacking a dread, where a 6 is needed all the time unless stunned or immobilized when you use the normal rules.

I must thank sonoftaurus for reminding me that the attacks are resolved against the rear armor.

Because my squad had Krak grenades then at least I should have by all accounts get some glancing hits that might have ended the threat.
I hope that you get something useful from this post, for I have since next time I will add remember my grenades .

Hello Today I was daydreaming of me blogging about my favorite subject and suddenly I came to the realization of why I started to blog. it was pure greed and I must confess it, because although I have already planned to blog and I already had decided to do it about Warhammer but because of laziness nothing was done, that was until Santa Cruz Warhammer ran a give away that I cared for, I didn’t win in that event but in the end I ended up wining a lot because I earned a lot of friends and experience. for that I'm really happy but this tale have sparked my curiosity to know why you started to blog and if you blog of other things what came before, the other things or Warhammer.

I hope to hear from all of you.

Choosing colors for your base is important too.

After so long working on your most fantastic paint job ever, you put a base on it only to discover that something is not quite right?

Have you though about it? What it could be?

To illustrate my point I will use unfinished models but they will suffice. First the non matching bases one black and the other white.

The models look good and many hobbyists will stop at that point (well I know the face on the first one needs a bit of work but that is for another post) but after some extra work here they are:

Now the models themselves haven’t changed but they look better on the second round, why? it is simple the base is an extension of your model, so the colors you chose for it become part of it. When you get that point you will understand that you can also apply the advice given by SandWyrm on his color theory series to choose the colors for your base to get a more unified and better looking model.

I know the article is short but the idea is to give you food for though so you can start reviewing your basing strategy and in turn get better results with your mimis.

Magnetizing my STC weapons STC magnetics Part 2.

Yesterday I worked on my STC weapons, first the I added magnets to the second Rhino hull, here magnet placement is key for it will make or break your overall work.

careful drilling is only needed to the point where you center the position of your magnet, next you need to enlarge your hole so the magnet fits in there.

I did it with a file as you can see. next in line were the weapons that only needed drilling in the contact point in the middle, the other holes are natural fits for 1/8 by 1/16 magnets.

Workspace hacking day.

I have for the longest of time the idea to have my PC placed against the wall, unfortunately the area where I have it is a NO drill zone, so I brewed a hidden plan to at least hack something that satiates my need for vertical space usage, it has been a long time but today I got my hands on a hook that fulfilled my needs, it is a shame that I remembered too late that some pictures where in order /but here they are anyway.

My small workspace with the first notebook stress test (it was really stressing to let it sit there for a while, I though it was eons), after all was good and proper I decided to fire up everything and test usability.

Here I’m placing everything back in the desk.

As you can see from the elevated picture The third monitor is not going to be easy to use but is not uncomfortable, any way my primary and secondary monitors are all I need

That is all for now. I'm happy that now I have a bit more space for that lot of almost finished minis that have been around from the longest of times.

My first steps using magnets to customize my STC tanks.

Here I'm posting my first steps in having a fully customizable STC task Force, first step I did was to set up the magnets for the roof doors.

the key here is to properly align the holes for the magnets so they are part of the wall and don’t raise from it a lot.

Next decision I took was to don’t use magnets in the door themselves, why?

well that is easy:

Because I have only 200 magnets and it might sound like a lot but it is not specially when taxes and transport cost raise the cost for each magnet to Q1.00 (about 1/8 of dollar) and we all must remember that when modeling each cent maters.
Alignment compatibility, it is more easy that way because I don’t have to properly align each and every one of the magnets in all the tanks in the proper direction.

Next question is: why to waste my magnets in the roof?

For this one I must confess that I like the idea of representing rhinos that have troops with the door closed and those empty with open ones. and to be more truthful I want to display the interior once in a while.

for the door I tried first to drill some longitudinal holes in the door hinges where I could pass some metal pins, it didn’t worked, next I tried using my drill to do a cross hole but it didn’t work too, that is because in both cases the grip was to weak and in one instance I broke the hinge of the door and in the other I broke the drill.

My solution was to sand the hinges with a sharp thin file to create a canal in the inner and the exterior parts of the hinges, that made a lot of difference here are the photos:

It has a good grip on the door.

next time I hope to complete the magnetization of all the doors, stay tune.

A new tool for my arsenal

You may recall that sometime ago I ordered 3 tanks, they have been there waiting to be built but I decided that it was better to have them magnetized, so after a long delay I finally received 200 small 1/b by 1/16 magnets and 40 1/4 by 1/8 ones here they are:

Ok today I worked a bit more on my space marines, since I haven't done a lot of advance lately my course of action was to paint the bases using the traditional recipe, it really improved my WIP look:

first the scouts

next my second edition space marines

I think that painting the bases helped a lot with my perception of progress and finally just one more thing , look what I found today:

My Ork Bike Bases

After doing the bases for my Space Marines Bikes I decided that I wanted something similar with my Orks so tonight I started on the first of six that I need.
The plan is to resemble battle zone terrain so instead of the flat surface that I used on the Space Marines Bikes that I did recently we need to have a rough one that is going to be accomplished using some sand and broken plastic pieces. The brewing of a MAD plan.

OK this one is for you Flekzzo this is a mad plan I so we can finally do something with the fact that we are separated by a great distance and both want to face each other.

What I want to do is simple try to setup a small common table with elements that we have in common for a Space Marine vs Space Marine 500pts battle. Do you think is your internet connection capable of doing something of a modern version of play by mail Warhammer.

Starting my adventure creating a Warhammer 40k campaign

Ok, I have never before done that but you have to start somewhere, since it is one of the goals for 2011.
To start I need to define what elements are needed to create a successful campaign on your own, like:

Setting
Narrative or story
Rules
Scoring or control system

I think those are the main elements needed to design a campaign.

Setting

Defining the place is great because it helps define your narrative, if done right it will easy the narrative part of the rules.
So far I think that the ideal setting for my long term campaign (it should run for 10 months because we don’t get to play each 2 weeks) is an undiscovered planet near the Tau region where the warp storms have finally recede enough to travel there.
The location is near Tau, Orks, the Imperium and Eldar, besides them what malignant forces could have been left behind by the terrible Warp storms,and Tyranids could arrive there anyway for one never is sure where a new tendril might arrive.

Narrative

After discovering the planet Imperial augurs have been able to detect enormous quantities of key mineral assets so the empire decreed that the nearby a Ultramarine Company did investigate the surface in advance of Imperial Colonist, unknown to every one the planet in question was a lost maiden world so the eldar will protect it from every one else.
While the troops are dispatched strange things are happening near the planet like the psy silent that is now so associated with Tyranids or worst yet an space hulk had been detected some centuries ago in its direction, what could be there, and last since the planet is near the Tau Sphere it might be concluded that they could sent a cadre ready to investigate.

That is what I have ready so far let me decide later on the rules ant tracking system.

My Plans on the long term for the hobby.

With the new year I’m beginning to form plans, as you might know here in Guatemala we are few and are lacking an identity, I want to fix it and to start it my first idea is to have a motto an I like:

“The few, the hobbyists”

I wont lie it is a clear reference to the U.S. Marines Corp motto and the fact that currently we are no more than 6 players (Glenn I'm counting you). Next after that I will create a nice image as other communities in the “From the Warp” Network have done before.

The goal is to grow and strengthen the nascent community in Guatemala. (I just hope to find the other group that secretly plays).

That is for the group identity, but there are also plans for the group, like the aborted plan to organize a mini end of the year mini tournament. that is going to be a feature that I will try to do quarterly one tournament that helps us learn faster the rules (yes we are so slow) but that also help us to have fun.

Last but not least I feel that now that we have so many armies (Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Tyranid, Tau and Chaos) a campaign is in order, the idea is that regular play will advance the narrative at a steady pace but the mini-tournaments will focus on important events of it.

I will publish the camping details next week all I can say right now is that it will be started with a mini tournament that will set the initial stage of the sector.

A New Update

Tonight after a month filled with a busy schedule (taxes you must be careful with them) I worked on my AoBR Terminator Captain sword. the picture doesn’t do it justice but it works.

I used most dry brushing here, first I used Necron Abyss, then I started mixing a lighter blue each time by about 50% starting with Enchanted blue then Ultramarines blue and at last ice blue, finally I painted some lines with Ice blue. it looks a crackling energy weapon

Next time I will take some pictures in daylight.

Feliz año nuevo 2011

Hello since today is special for most of us I want ta take a look back to all done in 2010 and set general goals for 2011.

About 2010:

Sadly I think that It has been a slow year, I did more post these year but in 2009 I posted more frequently, on the good side I finally got to play with the good Hellboy, Ashi and Hellboy. The anniversary giveaway was good enough and I already have some plans IF work is still an option. My Ork army has grow a lot. in brief a good year but it could have been better.

For 2011:

I plan to post more, and improve my skills, play more and organize some kind of mini recurring tournament and a campaign. work hard so once more I can do the anniversary giveaway.

Lets keep it simple so it can be done.

A few words of THANKS

As a farewell to 2010, I want to thank Hellboy, Ashi and Hellboy, your friendship has been good and I hope it comes greater.

To Flekkzo, you have been a good companion along the way my blog has traveling from the beginning, your advice and appreciation of my work are really meaningful to me.

Merry Xmas

My Space Marines Bike bases Conclusion.

in this part of the tutorial I will show you the finished product.

Additional

Materials

Fine sand
Static Grass
white Glue

Procedure

To finish the construction of the cured bases I added first some fine sand and then small rocks, and finish by waiting for the PVA to finally glue (about 12hrs).

Painting

I begin the painting process by black priming the bases.

Next step was to dry brush different grays starting from codex grey and finishing with ghostly grey.

After that I washed everything with Devlan Mud, Ogryn flesh and badab black and after drying I finished by standardizing the bases with goblin green.

I like how the stamped Aquila looks with the wash.

The last step is to use white glue to add some static grass, here and there, just the minimum because it is a road so just a bit is enough.

With all the steps done I considered I completed the bases and here they are with the space marine bikes already posed on them (just no glued yet).

CONCLUSION

I'm pleased after seeing the end result , some could have argued that cork could have end up with a better result but I wouldn’t be able to stamp the brass bit that gives a cool surface finish to the road. Another thing I like is the shortcut I took for the road texture about using sand paper it really helps a lot.

My Space Marines Bike bases

Today I finally decided to do some bases for my bike squad.

I want to do an Imperial Road theme so here is the first part of my tutorial on how to do them, next one will be about painting them.

MATERIALS

3 round bike bases
some green stuff
a piece of sand paper
The small Emperor Aquila bit from the brass etched pieces that come with the Warhammer 40k basing kit.

PROCEDURE

With that list of materials I prepared the green stuff and molded it over the bike bases, trying to be consistent and achieve an uniform thickness.

here you can see that I uses a bit of plastic to get an uniform finish

next I wanted to give it a rough finish instead of the smooth texture I got, so I uniformly pressed the 3 bases against the sand paper (you can use the one you like the most I had only a rough one at hand)

The following step was to partially glue the Aquila brass bit to a plastic pipe and that way I got an easy seal that I proceeded to stamp over the green stuff

from there I used the flat end of a hobby knife to do the slate separations and the sharp one to do some holes

As a final step I clean the borders with the hobby knife and let them cure. Until next time when I will try to get a good concrete color that enhance the overall work. stay tuned.

OK. I have been out of the hobby front for work reasons and want to play a lot, so I'm throwing the gauntlet to Hellboy and Reingard can you both send me the list of an army below or equal battle-force points that you can field painted by Sunday 12.

Since we are currently 3 players each other 2 times and helps to referee at least 2 games.

If I recall correctly we can field 500pts from a battle force so I will allow that as main army and up to 250 points as sideboard.
All games will be objective based with 5 objectives per game and tabling is allowed.
Points are 3 for wining 1 for a tie and 0 for losing .
The referee has to annotate how many objectives has a player captured.
Is allowed to play a different army per round played, if you have them.

I have one eldar warlock and one tyranid warrior that I plan to offer to the player that wins more games and he takes home his choice of miniature.

In the event that a tie is outstanding at the end we can do one of the following:

If time permits a 250 points game is played following the kill team rules in the battle missions book, winner takes the prize home.
If not enough time then we sum the captured objectives to determine winner.

Ok that is, if you have a suggestion to do I'm all ears. And if you like it a lot the idea we can do more of that to get more things in the table.

Today I didn’t did as much overtime as recently so I came home and started to paint, what I needed to do was details, here is a picture of the last update:

Here I had only the gold trims and not too much else, today I have worked on some details like the Terminator helmets and everything looks more finished.

Using Brown as gold base color for my AoBR Space Marines.

I have heard about it before but never applied to gained knowledge until recently, when painting gold instead of using black try brown it gives you a better gold color, here I have two of my old Space Marines with gold

Compare them to my new Space Marine with brown under the 2 techniques I used to paint gold.
the first is plain Shining Gold over Scorched Brown on the shoulder pad rims, it still lacks the Burnished Gold and Mithril Silver highlights.

The second is Mithril Silver over Scorched Brown followed by the first Grypone Sepia wash.

For me the gold parts are better defined and richer when I use brown. what you think about it.

Minor update: I corrected some cases and words, added the word wash after the second technique and added the word Gold after Burnished in the second paragraph.
