Step by step for the base of my second riptide xv104

I have always belived that the base is a real important part of the models we work with, however my budget hasnt allowed me the pleasure of resin bases like those you will find on the net, that hasnt stopped me from trying my best, this time is no expection and I did a  base for my second riptide, a simpler one than the previous but a base I like a lot.

First I began by colecting the materials:

  • a small stone,
  • slate pieces,
  • piece of resin mold overcast (from my Forge World Crisis Suit - not necesary)
  • piece of styrofoam
  •  some small resin pieces on the 40k basing kit,
  • fine sand
and tools:
  • PVA glue
  • Super glue
  • Hobby knife
Instructions:
I shaped the styrofoam in a more or less round disc and trimmed the edges into a wedge
Then glued the styrofoam at the center with PVA Glue and then used the pva to glue the rock, the resin and slate pieces, once they where placed I grabbed a spry can of paint and pressed the trigger on a small circle that melted the stirofoam and let it dry for a while, for a more specific how to you can check the +Teri Litorco  video on Terrain Part 1

After that I covered the surface of the base with PVA glue, I made sure to cover the styrofoam that remained after the melting process was completed, it is critical as it will prevent more melting.

Next the sand, I just srpinkled a lot of it on the glue, after a while I turned on its side and tapped a bit (strong) so it the one that wasnt glued just falled off.

When I was happy wit the result I let it dry for 24hrs to be sure all the PVA was properly dry and then sprayed black, for terrain I like the muted tones it gives, way better than other colors.

Painting

the last stage was the painting: I started by drybrushing scorched earth but any dark brown will do, after that I drybrushed vomit brown
then I drybrushed graveyard earth  and finally a bit of bleached bone

I left the center of the crater mostly black and then I started to drybrush a dark grey on the stones and th ceter of the crater only, and started to pick some details like the spent cartridges with some brass and the chaos helmet, on the tubes I used screaming bell and astronomican grey on the concrete slabs, when that dried I used a wash of ogryn flesh on the slabs  and somo stones followed by a bit of devlan mud. I also  glued some static grass and painted some green here and there.

while it dried I painted the gem on the cross at the base

to finish my base I painted the astronomican grey on the rim and followed with skull white which is the color code for my tau. So here is the end result wich will have a pretty  Riptide in the short term feature.

Hope you like this brief step by step, until next time.

Testing my Tau XV25 Paint Schema

My desk has seen a good progress with my TAU to the point that now I have  two small fire warrior , one path finder, one crisis and some Kroot squads, plus my FW HQ and piranha, but the last 3 days my mind has been stumped with the XV25 unit, it has to bee different, but how?

surfing around I found two pictures, one with a quartered schema and other with an activating camouflage, I like them both but I was unsure with the second one, due to my personal abilities as an artist.

So today I painted one of them to test the schema here are the pictures but be warned that is a picture heavy post

More advance on my TAU

This weekend was a bit slow but at least I managed to get some prep work on my TAU and some bases

My first  Piranha has its base color on top of the primer:

then my Crisis and some firewarriors:

of course the fire warriors are a full squad not just the ones here and last I decided to prepare some bases for my defkoptas and TAU vehicles.

I need to do more but they are enough for now.

It is coming out nicely lets see If next week will have more updates.

My Ork Aegis Defense Line

(Warning pic heavy post ahead)
Ok, After seeing Klaus post on a dynamic scene involving a Force Recon unit, I was struck by this image:

So struck in fact that I must confess that  I had to steal Klaus Idea, (please Klaus forgive me if you are reading this), since a complete steal is not my kind of thing, I decided that an aegis defense line Ork style had to be built, and my ork mekboy started to krank things, some bike bases had to be sacrificed and cut some sprue to get the same arrangement with some liberties due to length constrains

with the pieces cut I glues some together trying to reproduce klaus style.

with the frames done I created some metal plates from plasticard

then some rives by cutting a thin rod of plasticard and gluing it to the

the following step on the process is to glue sand, as always I used my recipe for it.

 here they are completed

a deploy test, they look good.

I'm happy now with it, proof of it is that I'm still awake beyond 1am.
now my ork settlement is just one step more to become a reality, until next time.

Ork Watch Tower part 2

From the last post I was left where the tower was completed, and in this post I will cover the painting process that started with me  priming black.

Next was the base where I followed my standard recipe of dry brushing the following colors: Chaos Black, Scorched Brown, Graveyard Earth and Bleached Bone, then picked the rocks with Adeptus Battlegrey and some other greys each one lighter than the previous, finally some sand was glued to the base but some ended up at the rods,I dry brushed that sand with  Dark Angels Green  goblin Green, Scorpion Green and Sunburst Yellow, it looks like  mold. when the base was done I applied some glue at different spots where some scorched grass was fixed.

then started to dry brush everything with blood angels, ultramarines, dark angels and imperial fist colors,  I did it without being too careful, next all metallic parts were done with tin bitz then boltgun metal was over brushed, the I painted the bone skull, the difficult part was to choose the color for the wire or rope fixing it to the structure, I settle on bronze because it pop out over the bone color

Basing my Ghazghkull

Ok I finally had some extra time to paint a base for my Ghazghkull, I used one of my 40k basing kit bases.

The base

the Ork bozz
 Both together:

now to play with him, that is why I rushed to paint it.

My Basing method step by step part One

Today I was in the mood to do some basing, so I grabbed some basic materials and documented everything, I started by getting some sand mixed with small pebbles:
Then a bit of volcanic ash from the last Pacaya volcano eruption that covered most of our city in ash.
some bases (any will do, I use the same approach on all kind of bases), GW slate and wh40k basing kit parts
plastic netting to do razor wire
and of course the bit bag, glue and something to apply it.

with all that my first step was to glue with super glue the big parts like the ash and parts  as you see fit then after they are placed you put the glue like a cup cake top, here there is a little bit of info that you must me aware; if your base has a hole like the one in the flying bases I used here you should put  a peg to keep the hole unobstructed by the glue and sand.

it should be smooth but it will work if not. While the glue is wet you submerge the base on the sand, like you can see next:

you can see that a good bath of sand is necessary, when finally done you take it facing down the sand ant tap  to drop the  loose sand.

after that you might want to sprinkle a bit of sand  on the uncovered glue.
then you remove the peg and uncover the hole if the base have one, that must be done fairly quickly or you wont be able to remove the peg and that would mean that it would get dirty if you let it glue and haven't primed the base.  At this point you will have collection of good looking bases.

In the next installment I will add the bitz and start the painting, so stay tuned.
